Nijdam "Family Crest"

The "Nijdamstra Stichting", founded 1949, is the family association of the families
NIJDAM, WYNIA/WIJNJA/WIENIA/WINIA, VLEER/FLEER and NIEUWDAM.

    • The Roots of this family lie in Friesland, where around 1555

    (This year is in Europe known as the year Emperor Charles V offered the throne to
    his son Philip of Spain)

    WILLEM WILLEMS "the Old" built his farm (Estate) near
    the new dam (NYE DAM) in the river "Boorn" near Irnsumerzijl.

    The NIJDAMSTRA ESTATE (not in original form) still exists
    and it is situated between Irnsum and Grouw.
    The present residents are the Galama family.


    Nijdamstra State (The Status in 1997 !!)

    The 8 children of WILLEM WILLEMS "the Old" lived on the estate or in its vicinity
    like De Bird (near Grouw), Irnsum, Akkrum and Midlum.

    One of his descendants started to specialize in peat-digging and
    via Boornbergum and Ureterp his "branch" of the family moved to Haren near Groningen.
    The today's Lake Paterswolde was one of the results of the Nijdams' peat-digging activities.

    We have now a Database consisting of about 15.000 persons, all related to each other.
    Soon a name-index will be published on the Internet.

    Three times a year the Nydamstra Foundation publishes a Family magazine, called "De Nijdamstra TYNGE".
    For those who are not familiar with the Frisian language, it means "Tidings" (news).
    In this magazine you will find results of historical research besides various other articles on family matters.
    The membership of the association will cost you (overseas) only $25 per annum.
