Familystories

In volume V, pp. 393-4, of the Nijdamstra Book we can read the intriguing life story of
Sybren Wiegers Wijnia (Winia) 1815-1853.
What strikes us most in this story is the difference between Sybren and his surroundings with regard to his way of thinking. Sybren grew up on a farm, but he didn't want to become a farmer, like his father.
He liked reading books and studying. He was particularly interested in astronomy and mathematics.
His achievements in this field, all from self study, were phenomenal. Some of his writings have been preserved.
His essays on astronomy give some notion of his vast studies in this field. Even professor Nijland thought it worthwile to take note of his writings.

For obvious reasons his family did not understand him. Conflicts arose to such an extent that Sybren changed his name from Wijnia to Winia. This name appears in elegant handwriting on the cover of his essay "Mengelwerk".

Sybren lived in Rauwerd. There, and in the surrounding villages he was known as a scientist.
This appears from the testimony of a headmaster of Britswerd, who also practised astronomy.
He said to Sybrens's son: "In comparison with your father we don't know anything at all!"

Still, Sybren could not live on science. He left the farm and began a regular boat service. After his father's death he returned to farming for a while. He died at the age of 37, misjudged and undervalued by his surroundings. It is because of this that his library was sold for next to nothing, and partly destroyed.
I don't know if his essays still exist. I assume, on account of the article in the Nijdamstra Book, that the editor of the book, Mr. C. van der Schoot, had the opportunity of seeing them.(see also pp. 518-9 of the Nijdamstra Book)
